Installing WordPress on XAMPP

With wordpress 3.0+, installation is super simple. In the previous versions of wordpress, It was necessary to edit the wordpress configuration file (wp-config.php) manually. But now, everything can be done from the browser. This makes the remote installations too easy, local installations even more easier.

  1. Download latest wordpress from Current version is 3.0.1.
  2. Extract the to a temporary folder in your PC.
  3. Browse to the XAMPP folder. Locate the folder “htdocs”. It is the folder from which apache serves the web pages. Note: “htdocs” corresponds to “http://localhost”. So a folder named “wordpress” within “htdocs” corresponds to “http://localhost/wordpress”.
  4. Copy the extracted directory “WordPress” to htdocs folder. After copying, rename it to “wp”. I prefer short URLs, but its your choice.
  5. Now enter the address “http://localhost/wp” in your browser. Don’t be alarmed if you see, “wordpress error” in your titlebar. Just click “Create configuration file”.
  6. WordPress welcomes us on the next page and provides us with the list of items we need. Don’t worry, if proceeded as above, you have got it all. Click “Let’s Go”.
      1. Database name : It is wp.
      2. Database username : root (or the username you created)
      3. Database password : Your password.
      4. Database host : localhost.
      5. Table prefix : wp_
  7. WordPress prompts for the database details on the next page. Enter the details correctly.

  8. WordPress tries to connect to the database using the details we provided. If connection is successful, Click the button labeled “Run the Install”. Clicketty clickk!
  9. Next page is where we fill in the blog’s name, administrator username/password. Make sure you uncheck “Allow my site to appear in search engines like Google and Technorati.”. Click “Install wordpress”.
  10. If everything goes right, next screen is titled “Success!”. YAY! Now Click Log In and enter your username and password. Now ultimately click “Log In”.

The wordpress administration overview panel, also known as “Dashboard” is shown.

Now either click the blog name in the title or go to “http://localhost/wp”.  It loads the blog’s index page. Up , up and away!

Congrats ! Open-mouthed smile
